You Don't Have to Choose Between Your Faith and Your Mental Health

  • You love God.
  • You pray.
  • You believe.

And you may still experience anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional struggles, fear, or seasons when you simply don't feel like yourself. Sometimes that creates questions that can be difficult to say out loud:

"Why am I struggling if I trust God?";
"Does needing therapy mean my faith isn't strong enough?";
"Shouldn't prayer be enough?";
"Can I talk honestly about what I'm experiencing without being judged?";

At Conquering Mountains Counseling LLC, you don't have to separate your faith from your mental health.

I am Tiffany Ward, LMHC, CBT-C, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and CBT
Certified Clinician.

I provide professional, evidence-based mental health counseling with the option to intentionally incorporate Christian faith and biblical principles into the therapeutic process. Here, there is room for both. Faith and evidence-based therapy can work together.

Faith Doesn't Make You Immune to Emotional Pain

Christians experience anxiety. Christians experience depression. Christians experience trauma. Christians experience grief. Christians become overwhelmed. Christians experience fear. Christians sometimes struggle to understand what God is doing during difficult seasons. Experiencing emotional pain doesn't automatically mean you've stopped believing, stopped praying, or lost your faith. Sometimes Christians suffer silently because they're afraid of how their struggles will be perceived.

You may have heard:

"Just pray about it."
"Give it to God."
"You shouldn't be anxious if you trust God."
"You just need more faith."

Prayer and faith can be powerful parts of a person's healing journey. But sometimes you also need a safe place to understand what's happening emotionally, identify unhealthy patterns, develop practical coping skills, and receive professional mental health support. Therapy can provide that space.

What Is Christian Counseling?

Christian counseling at Conquering Mountains Counseling combines professional mental health treatment with faith integration for clients who want Christianity intentionally included in their care.

Depending on your preferences, treatment may incorporate:

  • Biblical principles
  • Scripture
  • Prayer
  • Conversations about your relationship with God
  • Christian identity and purpose
  • Exploring spiritual beliefs related to your current struggles
  • Evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • DBT-informed strategies
  • Trauma-informed interventions
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Boundary setting
  • Coping and stress-management strategies

Faith isn't used as a replacement for clinical treatment. Instead, your faith can become part of the therapeutic conversation while evidence-based interventions are used to address your mental health concerns.

Christian Counseling + Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Renewing the Way You Think

One reason CBT can work well within Christian counseling is its focus on identifying and examining patterns of thinking. Our thoughts can significantly influence how we feel and how we respond.

You may find yourself repeatedly thinking:

"I'm not good enough."
"I'm going to fail."
"Something bad is going to happen."
"I have to keep everyone happy."
"If I make a mistake, I've disappointed everyone."
"God must be disappointed in me."

Over time, thoughts like these can influence anxiety, shame, fear, perfectionism, relationships, and the way you see yourself.

As a CBT Certified Clinician (CBT-C), I help clients learn how to identify automatic thoughts, examine the beliefs underneath them, challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, and develop healthier ways of responding.

For clients who desire Christian counseling, we can also explore whether the beliefs you've developed about yourself, other people, and God align with the biblical truths you say you believe.

The goal isn't simply to "think positive." It's learning to recognize unhealthy patterns and develop a healthier, more grounded way of thinking and living.

Christian Counseling for Anxiety

You can trust God and still feel anxious.

Anxiety may show up as:

  • Constant worry
  • Overthinking
  • Fear of the future
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Perfectionism
  • Fear of failure
  • People-pleasing
  • Needing reassurance
  • Difficulty resting
  • Feeling guilty when you're not productive
  • Trying to control situations because uncertainty feels uncomfortable
  • Questioning whether you're doing enough
  • Feeling responsible for everyone around you

Sometimes anxiety can even attach itself to your faith. You may become overly concerned about making the "wrong" decision, disappointing God, understanding His will perfectly, or whether you're trusting Him enough.

Therapy can provide space to explore those concerns without shame while developing practical strategies for managing anxiety.

When Faith and Mental Health Feel Like They're in Conflict

Some people come to therapy carrying painful experiences from religious environments. Maybe your mental health struggles were minimized. Maybe you were told that depression meant you lacked joy. Maybe anxiety was interpreted as a lack of trust in God. Maybe you felt pressure to appear spiritually strong when internally you were struggling.Or maybe you've never felt comfortable discussing your mental health within your faith community.

At Conquering Mountains Counseling, you don't have to pretend.

You can ask difficult questions.
You can talk about anger.
You can talk about disappointment.
You can talk about fear.
You can talk about confusion.
You can talk about your relationship with God.

Therapy provides room to explore what you're experiencing without requiring you to perform spiritually.

Christian Counseling for Perfectionism & Performance Pressure

Sometimes the pressure to be perfect extends beyond school, work, sports, or relationships. It can enter your spiritual life too.

You may feel pressure to:

Always have the right answer.
Always make the right decision.
Always appear strong.
Always serve.
Always be available.
Always have faith.

That pressure can become exhausting. For athletes, professionals, leaders, ministry workers, parents, students, and other high-achieving individuals, achievement can also become closely connected to identity.

Christian counseling can provide an opportunity to examine the difference between pursuing excellence and believing your value depends on what you accomplish. For clients struggling with performance anxiety, we can also explore how identity, expectations, faith, and performance intersect.

Christian Counseling for Trauma & Emotional Healing

Traumatic and painful experiences can affect the way you view yourself, relationships, safety, trust, and sometimes even God.

You may struggle with questions such as:

"Why did God allow this?"
"Where was God when this happened?"
"Why can't I move past this?"

Those are significant questions, and therapy doesn't require you to pretend they don't exist.

Trauma-informed Christian counseling can provide space to process emotional experiences while respecting the role your faith plays in your life.

Treatment may focus on emotional regulation, coping skills, boundaries, unhealthy thought patterns, relationship patterns, and other concerns connected to your experiences.

Christian Counseling for Teens

Teenagers are navigating a world filled with pressure. Academic expectations, friendships, sports, relationships, social media, identity, family expectations, and uncertainty about the future can become overwhelming.

Christian teens may also be trying to understand how their faith fits into what they're experiencing.

They may have questions they don't feel comfortable asking at church or at home. Christian counseling can provide a supportive environment where teens can discuss their emotions, mental health, relationships, identity, and faith without feeling as though they need to have everything figured out.

When clinically appropriate and desired, therapy may incorporate both evidence-based interventions and Christian principles.

What If I Don't Want Faith Incorporated Into Every Session?

That's okay. Faith integration is individualized. Christian counseling doesn't mean every conversation needs to include a Bible verse or prayer.

Your treatment should reflect your needs, your goals, and your preferences. Some clients want faith deeply incorporated throughout treatment. Others may want faith discussed when it naturally relates to what they're experiencing. And some clients may prefer evidence-based counseling without incorporating faith at all. Those preferences will be respected.

Do I Have to Be Christian to Receive Therapy at CMC?

No. Conquering Mountains Counseling is a Christian-founded practice, and faith is an important part of the foundation and values of the practice.

However, you do not have to be Christian to receive counseling services. Clients from different backgrounds are welcome, and your beliefs will be respected. Christian faith integration is available for clients who specifically desire it.

What You Can Expect From Me

I want therapy to feel like a place where you can be honest. You don't have to arrive with perfect faith. You don't have to know exactly what to say. You don't have to pretend you're okay. My therapeutic approach is compassionate, nonjudgmental, collaborative, and intentional.

I will listen and support you, but I will also help you examine patterns, challenge thoughts, develop practical skills, and work toward the goals that brought you into therapy.

As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and CBT Certified Clinician, my responsibility is to provide ethical, clinically appropriate mental health treatment. And when you desire Christian counseling, I'm also honored to provide space where your faith can be genuinely acknowledged as part of who you are.

A Christian Counselor Who Understands Church Culture

Christianity isn't simply something I learned about professionally. Faith has been part of my life from an early age. I grew up in the church and have remained actively involved in ministry throughout my life. That experience has given me an understanding of both the beauty of Christian community and some of the unique pressures that can exist within church
environments.

I understand that people can deeply love God while simultaneously experiencing emotional pain. That understanding is one of the reasons Conquering Mountains Counseling exists. I wanted to create a space where people could receive quality mental health treatment without feeling that they had to leave their faith outside the therapy room.

Faith and Mental Health Can Exist in the Same Room

You don't have to hide your anxiety because you're a Christian. You don't have to pretend you're not hurting. You don't have to feel ashamed for needing support. And you don't have to choose between receiving professional mental health treatment and honoring your faith. There is room for both.
